Elton John (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, March 25, 1947) is one of Billboard's top recording artists of the past four decades. During the 1970's alone, Elton John had 25 Top 40 singles.

Elton John and his lyricist Bernie Taupin have teamed to create no less than 48 Top 40 hits on their way to becoming one of the most prolific songwriting teams of the pop world.

John's wildly successful hits include: "Bennie and the Jets," "Rocket Man," "Crocodile Rock," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," "Philadelphia Freedom," "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," "Island Girl," "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," and "Candle in the Wind."

Elton John has also shared the spotlight with fellow performers as he has teamed up with such notables as Jackson Browne, Jon Bon Jovi, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart and individual members of the Beatles.

John has worked professionally with pop legends like Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury (of Queen), and others to publicize and draw attention to the victims of AIDS and their need for special attention. He has personally experienced challenges with drug abuse, alcoholism and bulimia.

In 1994, Elton John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Added to his accomplishments are music in the hit movie "The Lion King," an Academy Award for Best Original Song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," and a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

In 1994, Elton John acknowledged his love-interest partner Canadian filmmaker David Furnish and at the 2001 Grammys he was criticized mightily for his embracing of song star Eminem.

Elton John was also personally connected with two tragic deaths, both in 1997: designer Gianni Versace and Princess Diana. His tribute to Diana, titled "Candle in the Wind" easily became the all-time highest certified hit song selling over eleven million recordings in its first month alone. All profits were donated to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.
